Brand initiative taps into booming food content scene, offering home cooks across Nigeria a shot at national recognition

A growing number of Lagos-based creators and home cooks are transforming their passion for cooking into digital content, with platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube enabling wider audiences to engage with Nigerian cuisine. The trend, which has accelerated in recent years, was highlighted on Tuesday, 11 June, as Power Oil launched its Certified MasterChef Challenge to further encourage the wave of culinary creativity.

Previously, sharing food online was limited to personal photos and casual updates. Now, detailed recipe tutorials, meal-prep demonstrations and innovative spins on classic dishes are attracting substantial followings. Many creators are using their kitchens as makeshift studios to produce content ranging from party Jollof rice recreations to affordable cooking hacks. According to industry observers, the accessibility of social media has turned what was once a hobby into new opportunities for visibility and income.

Power Oil’s latest initiative aims to capitalise on this momentum by inviting aspiring food creators nationwide to participate in the MasterChef Nigeria competition. As headline sponsor for the inaugural season, Power Oil is extending the contest beyond television by encouraging home cooks to submit original cooking videos online for a chance to reach the grand finale. The company says this approach celebrates not only culinary skill but also creativity and self-expression in Nigeria’s food community.

Roland Akpe, Marketing Manager for Oil & Fats Portfolio at Tolaram, said the campaign was inspired by Nigerians’ increasing use of food as a medium for building communities online. “We’re seeing more Nigerians express themselves through food, whether that’s sharing recipes online or experimenting with new ideas in the kitchen. Through the Power Oil-Certified MasterChef Challenge, we’re creating a platform where talented home cooks can showcase their skills and gain visibility,” Akpe stated in a press briefing.

Industry analysts say such competitions provide valuable exposure for emerging talent who may otherwise struggle to stand out in an increasingly crowded digital space. Participants can upload their entries via masterchef.poweroil.com.ng and rally support through public votes. With Nigeria’s online creator economy expanding rapidly, stakeholders expect similar initiatives will further boost local entrepreneurship and strengthen cultural pride in indigenous cuisine.

Former Bayelsa Governor condemns criticism from Labour Party loyalists, says NDC not seeking favours in national discourse

Former Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, has condemned recent attacks by supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi against the Niger Delta Congress (NDC), insisting that the group is not seeking special favours but rather demanding fair representation in Nigeria’s affairs. Dickson made this known in a statement issued on Thursday.

The former governor, who is also a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), addressed the situation following social media criticisms and public statements targeted at the NDC after it raised concerns over perceived marginalisation in federal appointments and resource allocation. Dickson described the backlash from some Labour Party loyalists as unwarranted and called for more respect towards Niger Delta advocacy groups.

This development comes amid heightened political debate over inclusion and equity in national governance, especially as various regional groups continue to seek greater participation. The NDC had recently called attention to what it described as inadequate recognition for Niger Delta interests under successive administrations, leading to renewed calls for dialogue on power sharing and resource control.

Dickson stated, “Nobody is doing the NDC a favour; what we are asking for is fairness and respect for the Niger Delta people. The attacks by some supporters of Peter Obi are unnecessary and only serve to undermine unity.” He urged all parties to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to personal attacks, emphasising that Nigeria’s progress depends on inclusivity. No official response had been issued by Peter Obi or Labour Party representatives as at press time.

Observers note that tensions around federal character principles and regional representation remain sensitive topics within Nigeria’s political landscape. Analysts believe that continued engagement among stakeholders may be necessary to address longstanding grievances and foster national cohesion.

Oyo Police confirm four suspects arrested but exonerate Minister’s aide Ajiboye Sangogade as political tension rises

The camp of former Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has firmly dismissed claims linking his personal assistant, Ajiboye Sangogade, to the abduction of Adelabu’s younger sister and her twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident occurred on June 3 in the Elewura-Challenge area, prompting swift police action and public scrutiny.

According to reports, Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her children Peter and Paul were kidnapped by armed men, sparking concerns among residents. The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that four suspects were arrested in connection with the case. Meanwhile, the state government demolished a property allegedly linked to the suspects and revoked the ownership of the land.

Amid circulating rumours suggesting Sangogade’s involvement, Femi Awogboro—Adelabu’s media aide—issued a statement on Tuesday in Ibadan refuting the allegations. Awogboro described the claims as false and politically motivated, warning that those behind the reports could face legal action if they continue spreading what he called baseless accusations. He stressed that the Oyo Police never mentioned Sangogade during their official briefing and challenged anyone to produce evidence linking him to the crime.

Awogboro further stated that “enemies of progress” were attempting to tarnish Sangogade’s reputation for political reasons. He referenced previous attempts to associate Sangogade with party ticket controversies within APC in Ibadan North Federal Constituency. According to him, “These same people falsely claimed that Adelabu ceded the party ticket to his PA, who is not even from the constituency. In the end, Wale Olatunji emerged as the party’s flag bearer.”

He urged APC supporters and members of the public to disregard what he described as repeated misinformation campaigns targeted at Adelabu’s associates. The statement emphasised that Sangogade is a respected figure with no involvement or knowledge of the kidnapping incident. Awogboro concluded: “Any further attempt to tarnish Sangogade’s image and reputation will be strongly resisted, and our camp will ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.”

The Oyo State Police Command has maintained that only individuals identified through their investigations have been paraded as suspects. Police Commissioner Oluwagbemiga Abimbola led efforts resulting in four arrests on June 7, with recovered items including firearms and a getaway vehicle used in the abduction.

As investigations continue, stakeholders urge calm while security agencies pursue leads. The opposition could not be immediately reached for comment on ongoing security concerns in Oyo State.
