Party targets grassroots mobilisation as council is unveiled in Ado-Ekiti, promising inclusive campaign for South-West state

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday inaugurated its campaign council for the upcoming Ekiti State governorship election, holding a ceremony in Ado-Ekiti to formally launch preparations for the high-stakes poll. The event, which brought together party leaders and stakeholders from across the South-West, marks a major step as APC seeks to retain its hold on the state.

During the inauguration, key APC chieftains charged council members to prioritise grassroots engagement and unity within the party. The newly formed council is expected to coordinate campaign activities, oversee mobilisation efforts across all local government areas, and ensure compliance with electoral guidelines ahead of the election.

The inauguration comes as political activities gather momentum in Ekiti State, with rival parties also strategising to challenge APC’s dominance. The state has long been seen as a battleground in South-West politics, making this governorship race especially significant for all major parties. Analysts say the formation of an organised campaign structure gives APC an early organisational advantage.

While details of the council’s leadership and membership were not disclosed at the event, party officials emphasised inclusivity and broad representation. “We are committed to running an issue-based campaign that resonates with every community in Ekiti,” a party leader stated during remarks at the inauguration.

The council will immediately commence outreach programmes across wards and LGAs, aiming to consolidate support ahead of formal electioneering activities. Other political parties are expected to announce their own campaign teams in the coming weeks as preparations intensify for what is expected to be a closely contested governorship election.

Arrests come amid renewed efforts to curb oil theft; authorities urge local communities to support security operations

The Nigerian Navy has arrested three individuals suspected of vandalising petroleum pipelines in Warri, Delta State, on Saturday. The suspects were apprehended during a routine patrol aimed at protecting critical oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.

According to Navy officials, the arrests followed intelligence reports indicating suspicious activities around a key pipeline corridor within Warri metropolis. Security personnel launched an operation early Saturday morning, leading to the interception and detention of the three suspects at the scene. The men are currently in custody pending further investigation.

Pipeline vandalism remains a major threat to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, especially in the South-South geopolitical zone where crude theft and illegal refining have caused significant revenue losses for government and multinational operators. Stakeholders say such incidents also pose environmental risks for host communities and hinder economic development across Delta State and neighbouring areas.

A senior Navy officer involved in the operation stated that the force will intensify surveillance and collaborate with other security agencies to deter similar acts. He also appealed to residents of affected communities to volunteer information that could help track criminal networks targeting national assets. As at press time, details about charges or possible prosecution were yet to be released.

The latest arrests signal a renewed push by security agencies to tackle persistent sabotage in Nigeria’s oil-rich regions. Authorities say more joint patrols will be deployed across known hotspots while engagement with local leaders will be strengthened to discourage further attacks on pipeline infrastructure.

Access Holdings Plc on Wednesday held its 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos, with the board and executive management reaffirming their commitment to a long-term value creation strategy amid what they described as a dynamic operating environment. The meeting, which brought together directors, shareholders, and top executives at the company’s Lagos headquarters, focused on sustaining growth and strengthening the balance sheet for future resilience.

During the AGM, Chairman Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, addressed shareholders by stressing that the real test for any financial institution is not just about expanding rapidly but also ensuring that growth is profitable and sustainable over time. He stated that Access Holdings would continue to pursue disciplined expansion even as the Nigerian economy faces headwinds from currency volatility and shifting regulatory conditions.

The gathering comes at a time when many Nigerian banks and financial institutions are reassessing their strategies in response to naira depreciation and rising inflation. Access Holdings’ leadership used the occasion to reassure investors of the group’s ability to weather economic shifts while maintaining steady returns. According to management, focusing on robust governance and prudent risk management will be key to delivering value for both shareholders and customers going forward.

Aig-Imoukhuede said at the meeting that balance sheet strength remains a top priority, while Executive Director Bolaji Agbede highlighted ongoing investments in digital banking infrastructure as critical for future competitiveness. Other board members present included Group Chief Executive Officer Innocent Ike and directors Ibironke Adeyemi, Ojinika Olaghere, Fatimah Bello-Ismail, Lanre Bamisebi, alongside Company Secretary Sunday Ekwochi.

As Access Holdings continues its strategic transition following industry reforms in recent years, stakeholders expect further updates on capital raising initiatives and regional expansion plans in subsequent quarters. State government moves to boost security presence as residents face renewed attacks in South-East region

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has revealed that more soldiers will soon be deployed to the state in response to rising insecurity and recent attacks. The announcement was made on Saturday, 13 June, as part of ongoing efforts by the state government to restore peace in affected communities across Anambra, located in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone.

Soludo stated that his administration is working closely with security agencies to increase the presence of military personnel in strategic locations. He explained that the fresh deployment is aimed at curbing criminal activities, especially in areas that have witnessed a surge in armed attacks and abductions. “We are not resting until every part of Anambra is safe for our people,” the governor said.

In recent months, several communities in Anambra have experienced incidents of violence and kidnappings, prompting calls from residents and stakeholders for urgent intervention. Security remains a top concern in the South-East, where armed men have targeted civilians and security operatives alike, disrupting economic activities and daily life.

Governor Soludo assured citizens that government has intensified collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to address these challenges. He noted that additional troops would complement ongoing operations already launched by security forces. According to him, this move is part of a broader strategy involving intelligence sharing and community engagement aimed at rooting out criminal elements.

The governor urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information on suspicious movements or individuals. He emphasised that restoring lasting peace requires joint efforts between government, traditional rulers, community leaders, and ordinary citizens. “Security is everybody’s business,” Soludo said.

While some residents welcomed the planned deployment as a step towards safety, others expressed concern about possible human rights abuses or disruption of local activities. The state government pledged to ensure that security operations respect the rights of law-abiding citizens while focusing on neutralising threats.

As at press time, details on the exact number of troops expected and specific deployment locations had not been disclosed. The opposition could not be immediately reached for comment regarding the state’s approach. Security analysts say sustained military presence could deter further violence if combined with socio-economic interventions addressing underlying grievances.
