Borno State Records 74 Deaths as Cholera Outbreak Overwhelms Health Facilities

More than 7,800 suspected cases reported across North-East state; authorities rush emergency supplies to affected LGAs

A deadly cholera outbreak has claimed at least 74 lives and left over 7,800 suspected cases in Borno State, straining already stretched healthcare resources as at Wednesday, 10 June. State health officials confirmed the rising toll, warning that facilities across several local government areas are struggling to cope with the surge in patients.

The outbreak began spreading rapidly in late May, with initial cases detected in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council before escalating to other LGAs including Jere, Konduga, and Gwoza. Health workers say isolation wards and cholera treatment centres are now operating beyond capacity, with many patients being treated on makeshift beds or mats due to lack of space and medical supplies.

Cholera remains a persistent threat in Nigeria’s North-East, worsened by overcrowded IDP camps and limited access to clean water following years of insurgency. Public health experts note that the current outbreak is the worst in Borno since 2021, raising fears of further escalation if urgent interventions are not sustained. The state government has launched an emergency response team and stepped up distribution of oral rehydration salts and water purification tablets to affected communities.

“We are working round the clock to contain the spread and save lives,” a senior official from Borno State Ministry of Health said during a press briefing. However, some residents have expressed frustration over delays in accessing treatment and inadequate sanitation infrastructure. Humanitarian agencies operating in the region have also appealed for more resources to support local health teams.

Authorities have urged residents to maintain strict hygiene practices and report symptoms early. The state government says it will continue collaborating with federal agencies and international partners as more resources are mobilised to combat the outbreak.

Ugochinyere’s Nomination as House Minority Leader Triggers Debate Over Eligibility in Abuja

Lawmakers question Imo Rep’s qualification for leadership post, citing House rules and party zoning arrangements

The nomination of Ikenga Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State, as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives in Abuja on Wednesday has sparked heated debate among lawmakers regarding his eligibility for the position. The controversy emerged during plenary as members raised questions about both the selection process and adherence to established House procedures.

According to information from the chamber, some legislators argued that Ugochinyere’s nomination did not comply with the standing orders of the House, which they claim require strict observance of party nominations and internal zoning agreements. The issue reportedly divided members along party lines, with some insisting on further consultations before any final decision could be taken on the minority leadership slot.

The debate comes at a time when questions over legislative leadership positions have become increasingly significant in Nigeria’s current political climate. Leadership roles within the National Assembly often carry weight for policy direction and resource allocation, making such contests particularly consequential for both parties and their constituencies nationwide.

While some lawmakers maintained that Ugochinyere was properly nominated by his party caucus, others insisted that due process must be followed in line with existing rules. A member who spoke during plenary emphasised the importance of transparency, stating that “the integrity of this House depends on our commitment to established guidelines.” As at press time, there was no official statement from the Speaker or principal officers on a resolution to the impasse.

The House is expected to revisit the matter after further consultations with party leaders and stakeholders in coming days. Observers say the outcome may set a precedent for future leadership selections within the National Assembly.

Nigerian athletes shine at USATF Lone Star Grand Prix; Ofili tops continental rankings while Onojuvwevwo smashes personal best

Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili became Africa’s fastest woman in the 200 metres for the 2026 season after clocking an impressive 22.15 seconds at the USATF Lone Star Grand Prix in Texas, United States, over the weekend. Competing alongside world-class athletes, Ofili’s performance saw her surpass Rosemary Chukwuma’s previous African lead, making her the top half-lap runner on the continent this year.

Ofili, who is based in the United States, took third place in a highly competitive race dominated by Olympic champion Gabby Thomas, who finished first with a world-leading time of 21.70 seconds. American Kayla White came second at 22.07 seconds. Despite finishing behind her American rivals, Ofili’s 22.15 seconds is now the fastest by any African woman so far in 2026, overtaking Chukwuma’s mark of 22.42 set in April at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In another outstanding showing for Team Nigeria at the same competition, Ella Onojuvwevwo stormed to victory in the women’s 400 metres with a personal best of 49.47 seconds. Her performance marked a significant milestone and placed her firmly among global contenders ahead of major summer championships.

Ofili had earlier posted a season’s best of 22.46 seconds in Gainesville, Florida, but improved significantly at the Texas meet — part of the World Athletics Continental Gold Tour series — underscoring her growing form as Nigeria prepares for upcoming international competitions like the Commonwealth Games. Athletics stakeholders have described these results as clear signals of Nigeria’s readiness to challenge for medals on the global stage this year.

Both athletes are now expected to spearhead Nigeria’s sprint and quarter-mile hopes at future championships, including Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and other global events scheduled for later this season.
