The tennis icon’s comeback could reshape the women’s game as fans await her first match since stepping away

Serena Williams, widely regarded as the greatest of all time in women’s tennis, is making her highly anticipated return to the court after four years in retirement. The American star is expected to feature at the prestigious Queen’s Club event, a move that has sent shockwaves through the tennis world.

Williams’ decision to lace up her trainers again comes after an extended break that began in 2020. Since then, fans and analysts alike have speculated about a possible comeback, but few expected it would happen this season. Now, with confirmation of her return ahead of Queen’s Club, attention has shifted to how the 23-time Grand Slam champion will perform after such a lengthy absence.

For many ordinary Nigerians who follow global sports closely, Serena’s return offers fresh excitement and inspiration. Her dominance on court and resilience off it have made her a fan favourite across Africa. The prospect of seeing Williams back in action has already sparked renewed interest among tennis lovers nationwide, with some hoping her presence can inspire a new generation of Nigerian talent.

While official statements from tournament organisers or Williams’ camp have not yet been released regarding match schedules or potential opponents, expectations are high for strong ticket sales and record viewership. Many within the tennis community say Serena’s comeback could shake up the current rankings and force established players to raise their game.

As anticipation builds for her first match back at Queen’s Club, all eyes will be on Serena Williams to see if she can reclaim her place at the top of world tennis after four years away from competitive action.

Red Devils to wrap up tour after facing rivals Leeds and European champions PSG in a packed August schedule

Manchester United will take on AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on August 15 to round off their busy pre-season tour ahead of the new Premier League campaign. The fixture, confirmed by the club on Tuesday, comes just days before the league kicks off later in August, with manager Michael Carrick looking to build momentum after last season’s third-place finish.

United’s pre-season journey starts with a clash against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, followed by a visit to Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway. The Red Devils then head to Sweden for two high-profile matches: Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on August 1 for the Snapdragon Cup and European champions Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg one week later. The team will also face long-time English rivals Leeds United in Dublin on August 12 before making the trip to Poland for their final test against Milan.

For Super Eagles fans tracking Manchester United’s form ahead of the new season, these friendlies are crucial. Carrick’s squad will be looking to sharpen up and integrate any new signings before competitive action resumes. The match against AC Milan is especially significant as it gives United a chance to measure themselves against elite continental opposition and assess their readiness for the challenges ahead.

Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox told the club’s website: “We’re excited to be concluding our pre-season tour in Wroclaw, Poland, with a big game against AC Milan. With fixtures now confirmed across five countries and six fantastic cities, these matches will provide strong preparation for the 2026–27 season and a valuable opportunity to connect with our incredible fans across Europe.” No statement had been issued by AC Milan officials at press time.

After wrapping up pre-season duties against Milan on August 15 at Tarczyński Arena Wroclaw, Manchester United will turn full attention to their Premier League opener later that month. Fans can expect line-up news and final squad preparations as Carrick aims for a fast start to the campaign.

Bayern’s Michael Olise racks up 30 assists, while Barcelona’s Yamal breaks records before his twenties

The FIFA World Cup has always been the place for football’s next big stars to announce themselves, and this year’s edition is shaping up to be another showcase for young wingers. From Spain’s Lamine Yamal—already a mainstay at Barcelona—to France’s Michael Olise, fans are set for a feast of attacking flair and creativity.

According to Planet Football, Lamine Yamal stands out as the most thrilling talent in world football right now. Still a teenager, the Barcelona graduate has already played over 150 matches for club and country—a staggering figure for his age. His dribbling, vision and ability to deliver in big moments have made him central to both Spain and Barcelona’s plans heading into the tournament.

Also making waves is Michael Olise, who has enjoyed a breakout season with Bayern Munich. The France international notched an incredible 30 assists across all competitions last campaign, underlining his status as one of Europe’s top creative forces. Olise is now being tipped as a possible Ballon d’Or contender if he maintains this level on the world stage.

France are spoilt for choice on the wings with Ousmane Dembélé also in their ranks. Although his season at Paris Saint-Germain was interrupted by injury, Dembélé remains lethal when fit—especially now that he operates more centrally in big matches. He is expected to play a pivotal role in France’s World Cup charge.

Barcelona’s Raphinha has proven invaluable whenever available, giving Brazil crucial balance and intensity up front. With fitness on his side, his influence could rise sharply as Brazil aim for another title.

Colombia’s Luis Díaz is another name to watch after his move to Bayern Munich. Díaz combines relentless pressing with greater attacking output, making him vital for club and country alike.

Meanwhile, Vinícius Júnior continues to be Brazil’s X-factor despite some inconsistency by his own high standards in recent seasons. His pace and trickery still make him one of the most dangerous attackers in international football.

No direct quotes from players or coaches were provided in available reports at press time.

The countdown is on as these wingers get set to dazzle fans when the World Cup kicks off later this month. Supporters will be watching closely to see who steps up when it matters most.

Somali Referee Omar Artan Blocked From US World Cup Over Visa Row, Misses Dream Debut

Artan was detained for 11 hours at Miami airport and sent back to Turkey despite valid documents

Award-winning Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan will not make his much-anticipated World Cup debut after being denied entry into the United States, ending his dream of officiating at the FIFA World Cup finals. The incident occurred at Miami International Airport, where Artan was stopped by immigration officials and later repatriated to Istanbul, despite holding a valid visa and travel documents.

According to Artan, who was crowned Confederation of African Football Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025, he endured an intense 11-hour immigration interview before being placed in a holding cell for several hours. Speaking to The New York Times, he expressed frustration and confusion over the decision: “I am very, very disappointed. I’m just simply a referee who’s trying to live his dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup,” Artan said.

No official reason has been provided by US immigration authorities regarding the ban. However, Somalia is among countries affected by lingering travel restrictions first introduced under President Donald Trump’s administration. Despite travelling with a diplomatic passport issued specifically to facilitate his journey after previous visa troubles—according to a Somali embassy official in Nairobi—Artan was still refused entry.

FIFA confirmed that Artan would be unable to officiate or train at the 2026 tournament. In its statement, FIFA clarified that it is not involved in host country immigration processes and that US authorities have communicated that Artan’s status will not change. A senior adviser from Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports also confirmed Artan had all necessary documents for travel.

This development means Artan will miss out on World Cup matches hosted not only in the United States but also Canada and Mexico, as all referees are required by FIFA to be based at a training centre in Miami throughout the tournament. Neither the Somali Football Federation nor any Nigerian officials had issued further statements at press time.
