The United States government has issued a clear warning to foreign influencers and content creators arriving for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: anyone earning money from posting content while on a tourist visa risks deportation. This announcement comes as the tournament, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, kicks off from June 11 to July 19, attracting thousands of fans and creators worldwide.
According to a statement sent to Spanish news agency EFE, both the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security stressed that any foreign national entering on a tourist programme who receives income from a US source is breaking their admission terms. The agencies explained that the standard B-2 tourist visa only covers leisure, family visits, or medical treatment – not paid work of any kind. “Having the sole purpose of the visit be content creation (as an influencer), thereby generating income from U.S. sources while in the country, is considered work and requires the appropriate visa,” CBP stated.
Fans hoping to document their World Cup experience for YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or Facebook with the aim of making money should take note: violators face instant visa cancellation, deportation, and future bans from re-entering America. The rules also apply to media workers; working for any outlet while on a tourist visa is strictly forbidden under US law.
Immigration lawyer Alex Galvez told EFE that anyone caught breaking these terms risks losing their tourist visa altogether. He added that there may be some legal leeway if an influencer’s accounts and payments are registered outside the US – but such cases would need a strong legal argument.
Neither Super Eagles officials nor Nigeria Football Federation spokespeople had commented at press time. The debate around World Cup immigration rules is expected to intensify as more independent creators travel for the tournament.
