Emotional letter highlights Liverpool bond as Robertson prepares to lead Scotland onto football’s biggest stage

The widow of late Portugal forward Diogo Jota has sent a heartfelt appeal to Scotland captain Andrew Robertson, urging him to carry her husband’s World Cup dream as he gets set to lead his country at the global showpiece. Jota, who was just 28, tragically lost his life in a car crash in July after helping Portugal book their place at the tournament. Despite earning 49 caps for his nation, the former Liverpool man never got the chance to play at a World Cup, missing out on the 2022 edition due to injury.

In a touching letter published by FIFA on Tuesday, Rute Cardoso — Jota’s widow — reflected on the close bond between the two ex-Liverpool teammates and their shared dream of gracing football’s biggest stage. Cardoso wrote that Jota often spoke about Robertson and the friendship they built at Liverpool from 2020 to 2025: ‘Diogo often spoke of you. Of the friendship you built, the battles you fought together, the challenges, the laughter, the conversations about football and about dreams.’

She described how deeply she was moved by Robertson’s emotional reaction when Scotland finally secured World Cup qualification after years of waiting. Cardoso added: ‘By achieving that moment and securing your place at the World Cup, you won’t be going alone. You’ll be taking his dream with you too.’ She encouraged Robertson to remember that Jota will be with him in spirit when he steps onto the pitch.

Cardoso also thanked Robertson for honouring her late husband’s memory: ‘So today, I want to thank you. Thank you for not forgetting him. Thank you for taking him with you. Thank you for turning the pain of loss into strength and into something so beautiful.’

Neither Andy Robertson nor Scotland’s coaching staff had issued a public response at press time. As World Cup kick-off draws near, all eyes will be on whether Robertson can channel this emotional motivation into performances on football’s grandest stage.

Celtic Boss O’Neill Faces Big Call on Iheanacho’s Future After Title-Winning Season

Super Eagles striker’s contract expires this month as new manager weighs up fitness and impact in Glasgow

Incoming Celtic manager Martin O’Neill will make one of his first major decisions at Parkhead over the future of Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho, whose contract is set to run out at the end of June. The Scottish giants, fresh off their Premiership title triumph, have an option to extend Iheanacho’s deal by another year but are not expected to trigger it without reaching a new agreement with the Nigerian forward.

Iheanacho, 29, played a key part in Celtic’s dramatic push for the league crown, scoring crucial goals despite battling fitness issues throughout the season. The club’s preference is reportedly to negotiate fresh terms rather than simply activate the extension, leaving O’Neill with an early test of his man-management as he takes charge.

For Super Eagles fans, all eyes are on whether Iheanacho will remain in European club football at a high level. His strong finish to the campaign has reignited hopes that he can work his way back into Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s plans ahead of Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches. Staying at a club like Celtic could give him the platform needed for national team selection.

Former Scotland international Alan McInally has urged Celtic to keep Iheanacho, highlighting his sharpness in front of goal. McInally stated, “If he can perform the way he did in the last six games over the course of the season, then he’s obviously worth keeping… If the manager feels he can get him going again, then he’s definitely worth keeping.” O’Neill himself has recognised Iheanacho’s quality but noted that ongoing fitness management will be key if any new deal is agreed.

With O’Neill expected to be unveiled as manager soon, a final decision on Iheanacho is likely before pre-season begins. Until then, both Celtic and Super Eagles supporters will be watching closely to see if one of Nigeria’s top forwards remains in Glasgow or moves on before AFCON qualifiers kick off.

Asisat Oshoala netted in both legs as Nigeria sealed a dominant 5–1 aggregate win in Ikenne friendly double-header

Asisat Oshoala has called on Nigerian football fans to keep supporting the Super Falcons as they prepare to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco from July 26 to August 16. Oshoala, who recently joined Al Hilal, was the star performer at Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, scoring in both legs as the Super Falcons swept Senegal aside in back-to-back international friendlies last Friday and Monday.

Oshoala opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first match, setting Nigeria on course for a 2–1 win. In Monday’s reverse fixture, she added Nigeria’s third goal as the nine-time African champions cruised to a comprehensive 3–0 victory, sealing a 5–1 aggregate triumph over their West African rivals.

This emphatic result gives Super Falcons supporters fresh optimism ahead of this year’s WAFCON campaign. For Oshoala, who will be featuring at her sixth WAFCON tournament and has already lifted the trophy four times, fan backing is critical. “Scoring goals always feels good. The fans should keep supporting the leagues, the Super Falcons and the Super Eagles. Thank you for the support so far,” Oshoala said after Monday’s win.

No official statement had been issued by the Super Falcons coaching staff or the Nigeria Football Federation at press time regarding squad selection or tactical plans for Morocco.

The Super Falcons now turn their focus fully to Morocco 2026, where they aim to extend their record by clinching an eleventh continental title. Their WAFCON opener will take place between July 26 and August 16, with fixtures and opponents yet to be confirmed at press time.

Barcelona Snap Up Egyptian Striker Ahead of Osimhen and Alvarez in Surprise Transfer Move

Catalan giants opt for North African talent, passing over Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez.

Catalan giants opt for North African talent, passing over Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen and Argentina’s Julian Alvarez.

Barcelona have completed the signing of an Egyptian striker, choosing to move quickly for North African talent ahead of rumoured targets Victor Osimhen and Julian Alvarez. However, at press time, the player’s name, transfer fee, contract details, and official unveiling date were not confirmed in available reports.

Details on how the transfer unfolded remain unclear. There is no information on the negotiation process or whether Barcelona held concrete talks with either Napoli’s Osimhen or Manchester City’s Alvarez before sealing this deal. The club’s decision to prioritise an Egyptian forward signals a shift in transfer strategy, with Barcelona reportedly seeking to strengthen their attacking options for the coming LaLiga campaign.

For Super Eagles fans, this development means Victor Osimhen will not be joining Barcelona this window—despite months of speculation linking him with a big-money move to Spain. The Nigerian striker’s future remains a hot topic as European clubs continue their summer squad rebuilds, but his immediate focus may now turn back to pre-season preparations with Napoli or a potential switch elsewhere.

Neither the Super Eagles coaching crew nor Victor Osimhen had issued a statement regarding Barcelona’s decision at press time. Similarly, there was no official comment from Barcelona on why they opted for the Egyptian striker over previously linked names like Osimhen or Alvarez.

With pre-season fixtures fast approaching, attention now shifts to where Osimhen could land next if a transfer materialises this summer. Nigerian fans will keep watching closely as Europe’s top clubs continue their moves in the market.
